The week ahead: A 'golden week' for China, but probably not for U.S. government

As the U.S. government hurtles toward a government shutdown Oct. 1, traders may be disappointed that the release of jobs data slated for the end of the week might not happen.

Meanwhile, looking east, China is hoping an annual one-week holiday known as "golden week" will help shore up its economy, which is looking anything but.

• Investors will be eager to hear what Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says about the economy and specifically inflation when he is scheduled to speak Oct. 2, if the U.S. government is still open.
• Also on Oct. 2, market watchers will hopefully hear from Michael Barr, the Fed's vice chair for supervision, who is speaking at the Cornell Club in New York where he will discuss monetary policy and financial stability.
• September's jobs report comes out Oct. 6 (hopefully) ahead of next Fed rate decision on Nov. 1. August's report showed the economy added a modest 187,000 jobs that month, below the 271,000 average of the prior 12 months.
• The fourth annual ETFGI Global ETFs Insights Summit-United States will take place Oct. 4 at the Yale Club in New York and virtually on Oct. 5. Day one is slated to include panels on topics that include "The Outlook for Crypto ETFs and Tokenization" and "Beyond Passive: Active ETFs Today and Tomorrow."

• Impact investors gather in Copenhagen at the GIIN Impact Forum Oct. 4-5 to hear from Temasek, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and others on integrating impact strategies into portfolios.

We’re heading into China’s annual “golden week,” when hundreds of millions of trips are expected to be taken as people across the country take advantage of the one-week holiday to travel domestically and overseas. Economists will be keeping an eye on travel and consumer data for signs of economic recovery, and some traders are hoping the holiday season will be a shot in the arm for the consumer, airline, hospitality and property sectors.
