The week ahead: Earnings season in full swing; SEC vs. the House

As fall foliage reaches its peak, it's prime time for leaf peepers and market watchers as more companies report on their third-quarter earnings this week amid concerns about inflation, global instability and other factors spooking the economy in the run-up to Halloween. Will Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the end of the week calm some fears?

Elsewhere in Washington, the SEC's flurry of rule-makings and agenda will be the focus of a House Financial Services Committee subcommittee. The witness list has not been posted as of press time, but SEC Chair Gary Gensler will likely say his piece. He will also speak at the annual Securities Enforcement Forum.

• Invesco will announce third-quarter earnings Oct. 24
  
• Federated Hermes and AllianceBernstein will report earnings Oct. 26.
  
• T. Rowe Price will show its hand regarding last quarter Oct. 27.

• The U.S. Services Purchasing Managers index drops Oct. 24.
  
• Oct. 25 will see the release of U.S. building permits data, crude oil inventories as well as a speech by Powell.
  
• U.S. third-quarter GDP and initial jobless claims for the past week will be released Oct. 26.

• The House Financial Services Committee's Capital Markets Subcommittee will hold a hearing Oct. 24 to examine the SEC's agenda. Republicans in Congress have been vocal critics of Gensler's regulatory priorities.
  
• The annual Securities Enforcement Forum will take place Oct. 25 in Washington. SEC officials, including Gensler and Gurbir Grewal, director of the enforcement division, will address the forum.

• On Oct. 25, the New Jersey State Investment Council will hold its quarterly meeting. Topics on the agenda include the election of the council chair and vice chair, a fiscal year 2023 performance review and the selection of external advisers for high-yield investments.

• U.K. unemployment data for August comes out Oct. 24.
  
• On Oct. 25, investor group Ceres will report on a new benchmark for investors developed through its Valuing Water Finance Initiative, and how 72 focus companies align with investor expectations.

• The Bank of Japan will release year-over-year core consumer price index data Oct. 24.
