Jay Clayton's last day as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission was Wednesday, he announced in a statement.
Mr. Clayton, who last month announced plans to depart the SEC at the end of the year, began his tenure in May 2017.
He informed President Donald Trump about his decision to leave the SEC on Wednesday in a letter posted on the commission's website.
President-elect Joe Biden has yet to announce a nominee to replace Mr. Clayton.
