Patrick McHenry, former chair of the House Financial Services Committee, is joining asset management firm Lazard as a senior adviser, the company announced April 18.
The North Carolina Republican announced in December 2023 that he would not seek re-election. In October, just a few months prior to that announcement, McHenry briefly served as acting speaker of the House.
Under his leadership, the House Financial Services Committee advanced two digital asset bills — one focused on regulating stablecoins, and one focused on setting up a regulatory framework for both digital commodities and securities. The committee, now under Chair French Hill, R-Ark., advanced a stablecoin bill again this Congress and Hill has said he wants the committee to advance what lawmakers call a “market structure” bill as well, creating a regulatory framework for digital assets.
“In today’s evolving landscape, geopolitical dynamics and their broader implications undeniably factor into business decision-making,” said Peter Orszag, chair and CEO of Lazard, in an April 18 news release. “Patrick’s deep policy expertise and distinguished tenure in Washington will be invaluable to our clients.”
McHenry said in the news release that it’s “an honor to join a firm as well respected and prestigious as Lazard. Their reputation for delivering prescient insights with global perspective is unparalleled. I look forward to helping advise clients and to supporting the firm’s long-term goals.”
McHenry also serves as a distinguished fellow at Georgetown University’s Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy — a position announced in February. He first joined Congress in 2025, serving 10 terms as a North Carolina representative.
