New data points in 2021 Top 1,000 data

On Feb. 14, Pensions & Investments will publish updated data on the 1,000 largest U.S. plan sponsors, with data as of Sept. 30, 2021. Total U.S. retirement assets reached an all-time high, jumping more than 15% from 2020.

The survey added a several new data points, with two focused on investments in China and the number of investment staff at plan sponsors. There was a wide variety of answers about the number of investment staff from a low of 1 to a high of 224. The median number of investment staff was 5.5 and the mode was 2.

Below is a table of plan sponsors ranked by largest assets managed per investment staff.

The survey asked about cryptocurrency investments, but there were no positive responses.

The survey comprises almost 50 questions with more than 150 unique data points. The universe is composed of about 600 corporate, 200 public, 100 union and 100 miscellaneous plan sponsors.
