Pensions & Investments compiled defined contribution investment option data from more than 250 U.S. corporate defined contribution plans. In 2022, plans had more than $1.1 trillion in assets. The average size of a plan was $4.3 billion. Sizes ranged from $169 million to around $40 billion. The original universe was corporate plan sponsors in the P&I 1000 ranking. Generally, plans with separate accounts were excluded as thousands of individual securities were listed in regulatory filings.
The average number of investment options is 26, which typically included 11 for the target-date series.
Plan sponsors continued to shift into collective investment trusts from mutual funds. In 2022, CITs represented 74.7% of the total up from 68.2% in 2020.
