Baby, it’s hot outside!
What a day! The markets were melting down and I was checking email on my iPhone on the corner of Third avenue and 44th street on the way back to the Pensions & Investments' headquarters in New York when my phone suddenly went dead. The sun was too strong, and it just seized up! “Baby, it’s hot outside” is all I could think about. Apple has $245 billion in cash and they can’t get Siri to cool down our phones so they don’t shut down? If you think it’s hot here, just be happy you weren’t somewhere in Europe this summer, particularly southern Europe. Mirjam Guldemond, P&I’s Amsterdam based manager of our World Pension Summit, reminded me that The Netherlands had record-breaking heat a few weeks ago! (If you’re interested in climate change and investing you should attend the WorldPensionSummit on October 22-24.)
I’m working too hard at P&I this summer to take a vacation so I thought I would let our community know about all the good things we are working on to help you, our valued audience of institutional investors, do your jobs better. P&I was founded in 1974 with just that mission, to help you. In fact, we are the only media brand that I know of that has a true editorial mission. We were established almost simultaneously with the passing of ERISA and the rest they say is history. We are here to serve the needs of global institutional investors, and ultimately those beneficiaries where the stewards of those assets have an enormous responsibility. Something tells me our readership is about to increase going forward as investors try to make sense of these markets and how best to structure their investments and portfolios! We are here to help.
Here are a few upcoming features and projects we are working on that should be of interest to you. If you’re a reader, you will want to be on the lookout for these important items, and if you are an asset manager or service provider and want to know more about how best to get your brand, products and investment team linked to these excited opportunities, please contact me.
The P&I Research Center has expanded with new data enhancements including:
Defined contribution content and other special reports:
I hope the above is useful as you work your way through the remainder of the summer, or while you are on vacation! During my commute on trains and planes, I have managed to find a few new books to read, and although I’m certain they are not NY Times Best Sellers, you might find them of interest!
WHAT I'M READING THIS SUMMER
Ron Carter: Finding the Right Notes
by Dan Ouellette
Ron Carter is my favorite bass player and I heard him play at the Blue Note in New York a few weeks ago. I also got him to sign a copy of his book. I’ve been a big fan since his early days with Miles Davis. Did you know his original goal as a musician was to be a classical cello player? You should read the book to find out why he became one of the most famous and most recorded Jazz players of all time.
The Tale of Genji
by Shikibu Murasaki
I spend some time in Japan developing relationships with the investment community there. It’s the third-largest market in the world and home to P&I’s Global Pension Symposium. Before a recent trip to Tokyo, my daughter Alexandra gave me a copy of The Tale of Genji which takes place during the Heian period in Japan.
Thanks for allowing me to share what we’ve been up to at P&I. I look forward to hearing from you on how we are doing and what we can do better. Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
