John Ritter joined Texas Municipal Retirement System, Austin, as managing director and head of real assets, CIO Yup Kim confirmed in an email.
Ritter started April 14 and reports to Kim. Ritter is responsible for leading the management of the $44 billion pension fund’s real assets portfolio — which, including uncommitted capital, has a net value of $9 billion, according to the pension fund's website. Texas Municipal has an 18% allocation to real assets, Kim added.
“John Ritter is one of the most respected and innovative investors in real assets,” the CIO wrote in an April 29 LinkedIn post. Kim added that he is “very excited to welcome him (Ritter) back to this hometown of Austin and to TMRS.”
Ritter was previously managing director of real assets at the investment office of the Oakland-headquartered University of California. A university spokesperson could not be immediately reached.
As of March 14, real assets accounted for 2% of the University of California’s total portfolio, and had a market value of close to $3.7 billion. The actual allocation of other asset classes were 61.7% public equity, 16.6% fixed income, 10.5% private equity, 5.8% real estate, 1.8% private credit, 1.1% cash and 0.5% absolute return.
Prior to joining University of California’s $184 billion investment office, Ritter held several posts at the $209.5 billion Texas Teacher Retirement System, Austin, including director of energy and natural resources.
