Shafeeq Abrahams was named CEO and principal officer at Eskom Pension and Provident Fund, Johannesburg.
Mr. Abrahams replaced Linda Mateza, effective April 1, a news release said. Details of Ms. Mateza's future role could not be learned.
Mr. Abrahams leads the 144.5 billion South African rand ($9.8 billion) fund's efforts to invest sustainably and with a positive social impact by 2024.
"We would like to thank Ms. Linda Mateza for her fearless, but gracious leadership over the last 19 months. Your courage, dedication and decisiveness during your tenure has propelled the fund to navigate stormy waters in unprecedented times and bring to fruition numerous improvements in pursuit of the fund's strategy," Caroline Henry, chairwoman of the fund's board, said in the release.
Mr. Abrahams, who has been chief financial officer of the fund since 2018, said that a replacement is being recruited.
