William J. Coaker Jr., chief investment officer of the San Francisco City & County Employees' Retirement System, is leaving to join clean energy company TAE Technologies as its inaugural CIO, said SFERS spokesman Stephen Worsfold in an email.
Mr. Coaker joined the $34.5 billion pension fund in January 2014 after serving as senior managing director for public equities at the University of California's Office of the Chief Investment Officer.
Kurt Braitberg, SFERS' managing director for public markets, will become interim CIO effective Aug. 3, when Mr. Coaker begins his new position.
"Under Bill's leadership, we have built out a deep and very talented team of investment professionals who will carry on the mission of SFERS," said Jay Huish, SFERS executive director, in a news release Friday. "He leaves SFERS in a strong position to sustain its excellent investment performance well into the future. That is Bill's legacy."
Further information on a search for a permanent replacement was not immediately available.
