Robert Marshall-Lee will join Odey Asset Management to lead a new global emerging markets team, effective in March.
The role is new. The team will manage long-only equity strategies, a news release said.
Mr. Marshall-Lee's recruitment marks the first external appointment in the hedge fund firm's development of a new institutional and international product offering, the release said.
A person familiar with the situation said Mr. Marshall-Lee is expected to build his team in due course, but will have access to Odey AM's 10-person research team from the start.
"At Odey Asset Management, we offer portfolio managers the autonomy to manage their funds and their analyst teams independently — without internal interference or the distraction of business management — ensuring they are free to maximize returns for their clients," Tim Pearey, CEO, said in the release. "This barristers' chambers style environment, in conjunction with our significant business infrastructure, has been critical to persuading Robert where best to develop his franchise over the long term."
Odey's AUM was not available.
Mr. Marshall-Lee was investment leader for emerging and Asian equities at Newton Investment Management. Paul Birchenough and Ian Smith were hired from AXA Investment Managers to co-lead the emerging markets and Asian equities strategies alongside Sophia Whitbread, a news release said.
