James Anderson was named managing partner and CIO of innovation at Lingotto Investment Management, a spokesman said.
The role is newly created. Mr. Anderson's background is investing in companies with the potential for exponential innovation in technologies and business models, a news release said.
Lingotto IM, a newly launched investment management firm with $3 billion in assets under management that is backed by Exor Partners, also appointed George Osborne as non-executive chairman.
Mr. Osborne, the U.K.'s former chancellor of the exchequer, served as senior adviser and chairman of Exor Partners Council.
"It's a pleasure to welcome James and George to the team. To be able to attract leaders of their quality and experience is a testament to the ambition of Lingotto and our determination to build a great investment management company," Enrico Vellano, Lingotto's CEO, said in a news release.
Mr. Anderson was previously partner at Baillie Gifford, and an early backer of companies such as Amazon and Tesla.
