Dr. Brett Zbar has joined private equity firm General Atlantic as a managing director and global head of life sciences, a new standalone sector for the firm, spokesman Jake Barnette said in an email.
Mr. Zbar, who earned a medical degree from Harvard University, will lead a team investing in growing or revenue-generating companies that are involved in the development of therapeutic and technology in the pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sectors.
General Atlantic had invested in life sciences companies in the past as part of its $1 billion health-care business.
Mr. Zbar had been a managing director at health-care and life science private equity firm Foresite Capital. His responsibilities have been assumed by the members of Foresite's managing director team, including Dr. Michael Rome, who was promoted in May, said Cindy Lundin Mesaros, director of marketing and communications, in an email.
In a blog post Tuesday, Jim Tananbaum, Foresite Capital CEO and managing director, congratulated Mr. Zbar on his new position.
"We believe there is incredible potential for Brett to run this new standalone sector under General Atlantic's growth investment platform," Mr. Tananbaum said. "And we look forward to working together as co-investors and colleagues in the years to come."
