Investment professionals can now be certified in ESG investing, the CFA Institute announced Monday.
The Certificate in ESG Investing is a self-study course created by the CFA Society of the United Kingdom in consultation with leading firms. "It was developed by practitioners for practitioners," said Nick Bartlett, head of practice analysis for the CFA Institute, in an interview.
He described it as a foundational certificate, with the course targeted at people who are involved in integrating ESG into the investment process or into the analysis, "and for people who need to understand that," said Mr. Bartlett.
The certificate is recognized by the U.N. Principles for Responsible Investment. After completing 130 hours of study and a computer-based exam that can be taken within one year of registration, candidates will be awarded a certificate.
In North America, the CFA Institute is focusing on pilot markets in Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington. A program is also being developed for Brazil.
Launched in September 2019 in the U.K. and Europe, it has a combined 6,000 registrations to date, 60% of whom are in the U.K.
"Our goal is to open up distribution with other markets as well. We will be looking to expand," he said. "Our focus is making sure that the syllabus is relevant."
