Shigeo Mito was named director of client services and global business development at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, a spokesman said.
Mr. Mito replaced Shin Sawada, who has returned to the $626 billion money manager's head office in Asia, the spokesman said.
Based in the London office, Mr. Mito is responsible for expanding the firm's European client base and developing new strategies for investors. European assets under management could not immediately be learned.
Mr. Mito reports to Akimichi Oi, head of investment management, the spokesman said.
"Shigeo's appointment shows our commitment to providing quality services to European investors," said Yukihiro Murota, managing director of SuMi Trust in London. "His long experience as a Japanese equity portfolio manager and as an investment specialist will further broaden SuMi Trust's client service capabilities."
Mr. Mito was most recently working with one of the firm's strategic partners as an equity investment specialist on a temporary basis, or secondment, the spokesman added. He was not replaced.
