Manuel Sanchez Ortega joined BlackRock as head of strategic development for the firm's infrastructure investment group.
Mr. Ortega will help oversee infrastructure investments as the money manager expands in Latin America, according to a company memo provided by BlackRock. He was CEO of Seville, Spain-based Abengoa, which runs solar power plants and makes biofuels.
“He will play a key role across the infrastructure platform, particularly as we look to extend our geographic and sector-direct equity capability,” Jim Barry, global head of BlackRock infrastructure investment group, wrote in the memo.
Mr. Ortega will oversee the infrastructure business in Latin America, including the acquisition and integration of Infraestructura Institucional in Mexico, a deal that is scheduled to close this year, BlackRock said.
