Although a Wilshire Associates report showed aggregate funded status of local government pension funds was down 11 percentage points in 2012 from the previous year, about two-thirds of P&I Online poll respondents were optimistic for 2013 being a better year.
Following the Wilshire report, P&I Online asked “At year-end, what do you think the funded status will be?”
Most respondents were optimistic, but some were guarded, as 26.4% of respondents believed the funded status of public funds would be up less than 5%. The next most common response, an increase of 5% to 10%, received 25.5% of poll responses. A small number of respondents, 12.3%, believe funded status would increase more than 10% in 2013.
As for the pessimistic crowd:
- 15% believe funded status would be down 5% to 10%
- 13.2% believe funded status would be down more than 10%
- 7.6% believe funded status would be down less than 5%
