Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, was named Legislator of the Year by the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems on Monday.
Mr. Harkin, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, announced Jan. 26 that he would not seek re-election when his term expires at the end of 2014. In his remaining two years, Mr. Harkin said one of his priorities is advancing his proposal for the USA Retirement Funds, a universal private retirement system with professional money management.
Speaking at the NCPERS Legislative Conference in Washington, Mr. Harkin said: “This is one of the most underreported crises in America. … I think it’s time to go on the offense. I really do believe that the time is right for us to put a new system in place.”
