Senate Republicans today picked Mississippian Trent Lott as majority leader to replace Bob Dole, who retired yesterday to concentrate on his bid for the White House. Mr. Lott, known for his ties to House Speaker Newt Gingrich, was elected 44-8 by Republican senators over fellow Mississippian Thad Cochran.
