Massachusetts' 106 public pension funds earned an average return of close to 25% in 1995. Unofficial figures from a scattering of funds show a 24.15% return for the Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Trust, Boston; 23.44% for the Massachusetts State Teachers' & Employees' Retirement System, Boston; and 25.22% for the Cambridge Retirement System.
Also reporting strong returns are the pension funds of Holyoke with 26.3%; Brockton, 26.1%; Essex County, 27.3%; and Southbridge, 27.1%. Official figures will be released by the state's Division of Public Employee Retirement Administration this spring.
The SEI median return for state funds in 1995 was 23.5%, while the median for local government funds was 26.1%.
