U.S. investors placed record amounts in foreign securities during the first quarter of 1996, according to the Securities Industries Association. U.S. investors bought $22.4 billion worth of foreign securities, bringing their foreign holdings to $383 billion, according to SIA's Foreign Activity Report.
At this pace, foreign holdings of U.S. investors could reach $1 trillion by 2000, according to the report.
U.S. investors bought $7.9 billion in Japanese stocks during the quarter, $7.7 billion in European stocks, $5 billion in emerging market equities and $1.5 billion in Canadian stocks.
