The stock market plunged sharply this morning in heavy trading. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 3.3%, or 283.21 points in the morning before rebounding somewhat to close down, 0.9%, or 77.76 points, at 8533.65.
The S&P 500 was down 10.36 points, closing at 1081.24. The Nasdaq composite declined 34.82 points, closing at 1797.63. Closing numbers are preliminary.
