The Dow Jones industrial average closed above the 10,000 level today for the first time ever, in a day of big gains for all major market indexes. The Dow jumped 1.88%, or 184.54 points, ending at 10,006.78 The S&P 500 rose 2.12%, or 27.24 points, closing at 1310.04. The Nasdaq composite climbed 3.01%, or 72.78 points, finishing at 2491.95. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was 748.5 million shares; Nasdaq was 867.5 million shares. All closing prices and volumes are preliminary.
