The stock market plunged sharply Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 2.22%, or 219.23 points, closing at 9671.28. The S&P 500 dropped 2.7%, or 34.96 points, to 1262.05. The Nasdaq composite sank 3.05%, or 73.18 points, to 2322.76. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was 805.7 million shares and, on Nasdaq, 950.1 million shares.
