U.S. key stock market indexes fell sharply today following a plunge in Brazil's stock market and the start of President Clinton's impeachment trial. Brazil's Bovespa index fell 9.97% in the wake of an 8% drop in its currency-to-the-dollar today. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 2.44%, or 227.86 points, to close at 9121.70. The S&P 500 declined 1.8%, or 22.19 points, to 1212.21. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.72%, or 39.92 points, to 2276.89. Volume on the NYSE was 796 million shares and 1 billion shares on the Nasdaq. All closing prices and volume numbers are preliminary.
