Stocks fell lower Wednesday in late afternoon trading as renewed interest rate concerns ahead of key economic numbers outweighed some strong profit reports.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 179.32, or 1.61%, to close at 10,945.50; the S&P 500 fell 16.45, or 1.11%, ending at 1,460.99; and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 81.09, or 0.67%, to close at 3,630.14. All closing numbers are preliminary.
