Mike DiRe was named director of real estate for the $111 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System, Sacramento, filling a vacancy that had been open since the November 1999 departure of Mitch Pleis.
Mr. DiRe handles the $175 billion California Public Employees' Retirement System's $2 billion core retail portfolio. He will oversee a staff of four who run CalSTRS' $3.2 billion real estate program. Heidrick and Struggles conducted the search.
Mr. DiRe's departure will create another opening in Sacramento-based CalPERS' real estate program. Guy F. Jaquier, CalPERS head of real estate, will become executive vice president and chief investment officer of AMB Property.
Philip Tasho and Ronald Marsilia will be chief investment officer and CEO, respectively, of King Street Capital Partners, Alexandria, Va. The institutional large-cap, value-oriented subsidiary of Allegheny Asset Management opened for business June 5. Mr. Tasho was CEO and CIO and Mr. Marsilia was president and COO, at Riggs Investment Management Co., Washington.
At Riggs Investment, Jonathan Bush has been named chief executive officer. Mr. Bush was a partner with parent company Riggs & Co. subsidiary J. Bush & Co. Also, Henry Dudley will assume Mr. Marsilia's responsibilities. His title will be chairman and COO. Previously, he was a senior executive director at the parent company.
Riggs Investment is in the midst of a search for a new CIO. A company spokesman said they expect to have one named within a month.
Frank Haines was promoted to chief investment officer at Christian Brothers Investment Services. He had been a senior investment analyst. A spokeswoman declined to comment on the previous CIO, saying only the position had been vacant for months. The company is conducting an internal search for Mr. Haines' replacement.
Jeremy Baskin was selected as the new director of equity management at Northern Trust Quantitative Advisors. He replaces Judy Bednar, who was recently promoted to president.
Mr. Baskin was a vice president at Northern Trust Global Investments; he will be replaced by Kevin O'Donnell, who was a managing director at Lotsoff Capital Management, Chicago.
Mark Britten-Jones was named head of equity research in Europe for Barclays Global Investors, developing BGI's U.K. and European equity strategies. He was assistant professor of finance at the London Business School.
Mr. Britten-Jones replaces Kevin Coldiron, who was named head of market-neutral strategies, a new position, said a BGI spokesman.
