U.S. private equity/venture capital-backed companies see increase in bankruptcies

Bankruptcies of U.S. private equity and venture capital portfolio companies jumped to 110 last year, or 15.9% of the 694 total number of bankruptcy filings, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

There were 95 bankruptcy filings of private equity- and venture capital-backed companies in 2023 (15% of the total).

Healthcare and consumer discretionary sectors topped portfolio company bankruptcies in 2024, with 29 and 27 filings, respectively, or 26% and 25% of the total. Information technology companies had 18 filings (16%), and industrial companies had 12 (11%).
