Plan sponsors' hedge fund hiring activity, net of terminations, was $784 million last year, according to data collected by Pensions & Investments. That's less than half of 2022's $1.7 billion and well below 2021's $5.9 billion.

Using HFRI indexes, commodity and activist hedge funds had the highest five-year annualized returns compared with several strategies, at 9.1% and 8.6%, respectively, according to the HFRI ED: Activist and HFRI Macro: Commodity indexes. They also had the highest volatility.
