With the ongoing debt ceiling debate, it's instructive to examine major holders of the $25 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. Since 2017, the Federal Reserve has increased its share to 22% from 16%. Foreign holders held 30% and other was 48%.
Pension funds hold major stake in U.S. Treasuries
Among the Treasury holders other than the Fed or foreigners, more than 13% was held by pension funds. Mutual funds were the next largest group at 12%.
