Investment Metrics All-Defined Plan Sponsor Universe's rough quarter

The Investment Metrics All-Defined Benefit Plan Sponsor Universe had a -2.9% third-quarter median return. The universe consists of corporate, public, Taft-Hartley, health and welfare plans, and endowments and foundations.

All categories had a negative quarterly return. Corporate pension plans had the worst, -4.1%, while health and welfare plans had the top return at -1.8%.

Most major equity and fixed-income indexes had negative third-quarter returns. The Bloomberg Global EQ:FI 60:40 index lost 3.5%.

Over the past five years, the S&P 500 saw a 9.9% annualized return. The traditional 60% equity/40% fixed-income allocation, measured by the Bloomberg index, returned 4.2%.
