The percentage of plan sponsors offering Roth contributions has risen substantially over the last decade, based on data collected by T. Rowe Price from its 401(k) and 457 plan record-keeping clients. It was 93% in 2023 compared with 44% in 2014.
Despite ubiquitous Roth contribution offerings, participation is low
The portion of participants making Roth contributions has increased but remains low. Last year, 14% contributed vs. 6% in 2014.
Those between 30 and 39 years old had the highest percentage of participants making Roth contributions, 18%. It dropped as the age group increased, and it was 5% for those at least 70 years old.
