Most defined contribution plans had real estate investment trusts and Treasury inflation-protected securities in their target-date funds, based on responses to Pensions & Investments' annual top 1,000 survey of the largest plan sponsors. There were 41 out of 59 DC target-date funds with REITs and 50 out of 59 that included TIPS.
Many TDFs didn't include private equity, real estate equity, annuities or hedge funds/hedge funds of funds. About 46%, 27 out of 59 plans, included commodities.
