Plan sponsors have increasingly used collective investment trusts as part of their investment vehicle offerings, according to Callan Institute's 2023 Defined Contribution Survey of plan sponsors that it conducted in late 2022. There were 84% of respondents that said they used CITs vs. 48% in 2012. During that span, mutual funds were offered by 79% of plan sponsors, down from 92%.
CITs increasingly used by plan sponsors
Generally, higher asset plans utilized the most popular investment options at a greater rate. Self-directed brokerage windows were used by 39% of plan sponsors and by 55% of those that have more than $5 billion of assets. Separately managed accounts for stable value and non-stable value funds were cited by 35% and 23% of the sponsors, respectively.
