The MSCI China index returned 23.9% in September, besting the MSCI Emerging Markets ex-China index by 22.6 percentage points. However, October saw both indexes reverse course, with China’s equities returning -5.4% and emerging markets down 1.1%.
Chinese equities generate strong September returns, but have lower returns than emerging markets over longer periods
Year to date, Chinese equities returned 22.4% vs. 11.5% for emerging markets stocks excluding China. The MSCI China index produced a 1.1% annualized return and 22.6% volatility from 2010 through 2023 compared with 19.8% and 17%, respectively, for overall emerging markets.
Over the past 10 years, the MSCI China index has returned 3.4% with a 24.8% volatility. The MSCI Emerging Markets ex-China index had a higher return, 4.8%, and lower volatility, 17.6%, during this period.
