Angela Miller-May, chief investment officer of the $11 billion Chicago Public School Teachers' Pension & Retirement Fund, will receive the Distinguished Woman Investment Professional of the Year Award from Women Investment Professionals at its Annual Trailblazers event, which will be held virtually Oct. 22.
The non-profit organization, established in 1996, gives the award annually to a leading figure for her achievements and contributions to the institutional investing industry.
Ms. Miller-May joined the Chicago teachers pension fund in 2010 and served as director of investments until becoming CIO in 2017.
"Angela is an active WIP member and a trailblazer who is going above and beyond to change the investment management industry," said Susan Small, Chicago-based WIP's president, in a news release. "She is a leading voice when it comes to promoting diversity and inclusion in our investment community."
Ms. Miller-May said in an email she was proud and honored to become the latest recipient of WIP's annual award.
"I have attended the WIP Annual Trailblazer Dinner every year over the last seven years, and I have sat in the audience and listened to the award recipients and speakers talk about their career journeys, the challenges that they faced and the impossibilities that they conquered," Ms. Miller-May said.
"I took to heart each piece of advice that I was privileged to hear and the sage wisdom served to guide and support me along my own career journey," she said. "I want to be that conduit for other women. It is my goal to be an advocate for a positive change in the investment industry and to make it a more inclusive and diverse industry for the betterment of us all."
Ms. Miller-May is also a member of the National Association of Securities Professionals, the Africa Institutional Investors Advisory Council and the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems' CIO Summit advisory faculty.
She earned her MBA in accounting from DePaul University and her BA in economics from Northwestern University.
In addition to the presentation of Ms. Miller-May's award, the Annual Trailblazer virtual event's featured keynote speaker will be Mellody Hobson, co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments.
