Eduard van Gelderen, former CIO at PSP Investments, will join nonprofit organization FCLTGlobal as head of research, effective Dec. 15.
He replaces Jess Gaspar who resigned in June, a spokesperson said. FCLTGlobal advocates for a longer-term focus in business and investment decisions.
Van Gelderen will shape the organization’s long-term research agenda and define its goals. He will also produce research and communications to extend its reach and impact, a statement said.
"His extensive leadership experience, deep understanding of long-term investment strategy and proven track record in shaping sustainable investment practices will be instrumental in advancing our research agenda,” Sarah Keohane Williamson, CEO of FCLTGlobal, said in the statement.
FCLTGlobal's head office is in Boston, but van Gelderen will be based in Montreal.
Van Gelderen was senior vice president and CIO at the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, Montreal, which had C$264.9 billion ($195.6 billion) in assets as of March 31. He was responsible for PSP Investments’ total fund portfolio and long-term investment strategy, and also led the sustainable investment, public policy, global government affairs and strategic communications functions.
The pension fund — one of Canada’s so-called Maple 8 pension funds — said in August that van Gelderen would be stepping away from day-to-day operations and departing on Oct. 1. His departure was “mutually agreed” on after six years in the role. Alexandre Roy, senior managing director-total fund management, took on CIO responsibilities in the interim.
Van Gelderen joined PSP Investments from APG Asset Management, where he was CEO from 2014 to 2017. He was previously CIO at the Dutch manager, which managed approximately €603 billion ($673.1 billion) as of Sept. 30 in pension assets.
