The West Yorkshire Pension Fund, Bradford, England, has become a minority stakeholder in Rebalance Earth, a fund manager a focused on natural capital, according to a news release.
Rebalance Earth claims to be the U.K.’s first boutique fund manager entirely focused on nature as an investable asset class.
WYPF's investment in Rebalance Earth is intended to assist with providing solutions to U.K.-based climate risk, provided through nature-based infrastructure solutions.
Leandros Kalisperas, WYPF's chief investment officer, said in the news release: "Investing in Rebalance Earth is crucial for fostering innovative solutions and backing U.K. growth. As a large asset owner with a long-term horizon, we have a responsibility to provide direct capital to nature as infrastructure and to start to address critical issues like climate change adaptation and resilience here in the U.K.”
Rebalance Earth was co-founded founded by Rob Gardner in 2022. Gardner was also the co-founder of Redington in 2006, a U.K. consultancy which advised local government investment pool London CIV on building a natural capital fund in October.
WYPF has £18 billion in assets as of May 31.
Both WYPF and Rebalance have been contacted for comment over the size and monetary value of the investment by the pension fund.
