The coronavirus pandemic has significantly hindered progress toward achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals, M&G Investments warns.
The 17 SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity by 2030. They were launched five years ago.
M&G assessed whether the world is on target, behind or ahead of schedule in terms of progress toward each goal, using its "SDG Reckoner."
Using an impact investing approach to the U.N.'s latest assessment of the SDGs, 12 of the 17 goals are materially behind schedule to meet the deadline.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted progress for 10 of the goals, with socioeconomic aims the most affected. M&G said the most notable finding was that more than 71 million people have been pushed into extreme poverty this year according to the U.N.
