University of Wisconsin-Madison's endowment returns a net 10.5% for fiscal year

University of Wisconsin-Madison's $3.8 billion endowment returned a net 10.5% for the fiscal year ended June 30.

For the most recent fiscal year, the endowment posted the highest return among the 41 college and university endowments whose returns have been tracked by Pensions & Investments as of Nov. 13. The median return of the universe is 4.4%.

The endowment's return fell just below its policy benchmark return of 10.6% for the period, according to an investment update posted on the website of the Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association, which oversees the endowment.

For the three, five and 10 years ended June 30, the endowment returned an annualized net 8.3%, 6.2% and 6.9%, respectively, below the respective benchmarks of 9.1%, 7.4% and 7.6%.

The endowment had returned a net -10.9% for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2022.

Returns by asset class and the latest asset allocation were not provided.

As of June 30, 2022, the actual allocation was 58.3% global equity, 22.8% private capital, 11.7% real assets, 6.2% cash and fixed income and 1% absolute return, according to the foundation's most recently released annual report. The annual report for the most recent fiscal year is scheduled to be released in early 2024.
