University of Virginia endowment records 5.3% for fiscal year

University of Virginia Investment Management Co.'s pool of $9.9 billion in endowment assets and other long-term funds returned a gross 5.3% for the fiscal year ended June 30, according to an annual report posted on UVIMCO's website.

The return exceeded the pool's policy benchmark return of 3.3%.

For the three, five and 10 years ended June 30, the pool returned an annualized gross 7.5%, 6.6% and 10.1%, respectively, above the respective benchmarks of 6.2%, 6.3% and 8.2%.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, the endowment pool returned a gross 5.8%.

The best-performing asset class for the fiscal year ended June 30 was fixed income, which returned a gross 15.4%, followed by private equity, which returned 14.8%, followed by long/short equity at 9.9%; public equities, 6%; marketable alternatives, 1.4%; cash, 1.3%; real estate, -4.2%; credit, -5.6%; and resources, -27.6%.

Benchmark information for individual asset classes was not provided.

As of June 30, the actual allocation was: 32% public equities; 20.4% long/short equity; 18.9% private equity; 6.2% marketable alternatives; 6.1% credit; 5% fixed income; 4.8% resources; 4.6% real estate; and 2% cash.

UVIMCO manages the long-term pool on behalf of the Charlottesville-based university and its foundations. UVIMCO officials could not be immediately reached to provide further information.
