Missouri Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems, Jefferson City, experienced a breach of its email system in September, said Dearld Snider, executive director, in an email.
The incident, which occurred on Sept. 11, involved an unauthorized individual gaining access to a PSRS/PEERS employees' email account, Mr. Snider said.
The individual did not gain access to the system's internal operating system, and no evidence of any fraudulent activity has been found.
"Since the incident occurred, the systems have focused on identifying affected individuals, proper notification to those individuals and reviewing security protocols to prevent incidents of this type in the future," Mr. Snider said.
The systems sent a letter to everyone who may have been affected by the security breach. Mr. Snider added the incident was not related to any other events involving other government entities.
Missouri Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems have a combined $56.8 billion in assets.
