Another great thing about Polen Capital is that the executive team regularly eats lunch in the cafeteria and interacts with employees at all levels.

I joined Polen Capital within the last year and joined during the pandemic/a virtual work environment — the easiness of joining Polen Capital from the processes to the people made it an amazing experience.

Over the past year, as physical offices were closed due to COVID-19, the organization made sure each employee had the technology and hardware to perform their jobs at home. Also over the past year there were enhancements to benefits, like offering mental health assistance and assistance with child care expenses. Also finally, recently there has been a very strong focus on enhancing diversity and inclusion within the culture of the organization through the hiring of a D&I manager, (and) offering a series of firmwide presentations for Being Black in America; LBGTQ+Allies; Latinx; and Asian.

During COVID, the company was transparent and clearly prioritized the health of its employees during what was a very difficult time. Even though there are offices scattered through the country, hearing from top management through video emails each week and the virtual summit and town hall meetings, employees get to know those in charge and where the company is heading.

Mesirow is great at communicating (especially during a global pandemic) and they're great at checking in with and recognizing employees. HR checked in with me periodically after I started to see how things were going. I just received a small token for my one-year anniversary with the organization. While it's not the gift that matters, Mesirow recognized that it’s my one-year with the company and that (was) appreciated.

The organization allows flexibility and encourages a diversified environment with people from all skill levels and backgrounds.

Employees say: “All team members, not just supervisors and managers, make the effort to make sure you know what's going on with all areas of work.”

Employees Say:

Having Pizza Thursdays/Fridays and inviting the entire company to the daily research review are great, but I think the handling of COVID (especially when there was so much uncertainty in 1Q20 & 2Q20) truly made the company stand out. Uplifting and reassuring all-hands meetings were, again, very thoughtful and created a sense of stability when everything else felt so unstable.

In the last year they have gone to great lengths to personally ensure the health, safety and well-being of the team, and to express their appreciation for each.

All team members, not just supervisors and managers, make the effort to make sure you know what's going on with all areas of work. They want you to feel comfortable asking questions and understand the work that you're doing instead of just simply completing the work.

In my experience, I’ve come to know that culture starts at the top of the organization. The level of professionalism, collegiality and ethics demonstrated by the leaders of this company make it the best place I’ve worked over several decades. You cannot find a finer group of people to work with.

Employees Say:

As a woman in finance, I like that I see senior women across the organization. That tells me a lot about the organization's values and that it walks the walk and doesn’t just talk the talk. That is really important to me as a more senior woman.

The CEO's pronouncement of ‘no 2020 layoffs’ in the very early days of COVID — before we even knew what we were dealing with — was highly impressive. I'm not sure if all employees (particularly those on the lower end) grasp the magnanimity of that policy. I found it extraordinary.

We have a fantastic leadership team in London that thinks about the whole employee. We have a wonderful culture, a flex policy and great benefits. There is a strong focus on advancing our younger people and it is more than just talk. Recently, the firm rolled out a coaching program for employees, which has been very popular.

Headquarters: Foster City, Calif.
AUM: $5.2 billion as of June 30
Employees: 69
Years won: 2018-2021
Popular perks: An open compensation policy means all employees can know the salaries of their colleagues, allowing for open dialogue, fairness and transparency.
Employees say: “Management does an excellent job in being transparent and open about philosophies, strategy and potential changes.”

Employees Say:

While the company has always been charitable, the creation of the (Bailard) Foundation enabled us to further support organizations in the community within a set of new focus areas. Knowing that I work for a firm that cares deeply about helping to support homelessness, food insecurity, affordable housing, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) issues and financial literacy in the community makes me very proud.

Management does an excellent job in being transparent and open about philosophies, strategy and potential changes. They truly ‘walk the walk’ in being collegial, down to no doors on offices and open salaries and financials.

Personal matters are handled graciously. You’re treated as a human. I’ve had a few deaths in the family, and my boss and the management team were so supportive of taking time off as well as just checking in on my well-being.

3 Cool Things:

01

An open compensation policy means all employees can know the salaries of their colleagues, allowing for open dialogue, fairness and transparency. A flexible time-off model also allows employees to take time off as they need it instead of having a set number of days off each year.

The pursuit of excellence — as a manager, partner and employer — drives everything we do. We believe in accountability, respect, courage, diversity, and in balancing innovation and stability. And those values manifest in our compassionate, high-touch service; our firm-wide intellectual curiosity and deep industry expertise; and in our transparency with both clients and colleagues. Empathy is not a hindrance, nor is it incompatible with risk and investing. In fact, we think it provides an edge.

Employees Say:

We talk about the Abbott family and it’s true: The company really cares about the people and their lives both at work and outside. It’s nice to be part of a team with high standards but not sharp elbows.

During the early months of COVID, despite financial uncertainty and market dislocations, the company did not release/terminate/layoff any employees, including those that had job responsibilities that were 100% dependent on a non-remote work environment. Each employee’s well-being was placed first/above/before financial implications to the firm.

I particularly value the open-door (or at the moment, open-call) policy between teams in the organization as an opportunity to learn why things are done a certain way and/or how we might improve.
