June Kim, CalSTRS' director of global equity, is an Aspen Institute 2019 finance leaders fellow as well as the recipient of a new RockStar hashtag.
The educational and policy studies organization initiated the program in 2016 with its first group of leaders. Among this year's group of global leaders are executives from pension funds, money managers and consulting firms. Ms. Kim — also a member of the West Sacramento-based $233.9 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System's risk allocation committee that makes tactical asset allocation decisions for the total portfolio — is the only pension fund investment officer among them.
"I anticipate gaining an even broader view of the financial markets and its challenges by sharing ideas, visions, and actions with the other @AspenAGLN fellows," Ms. Kim tweeted after this year's class of 22 Aspen Institute finance leaders fellows was announced May 22.
Also selected were two other officials from asset owners: Carolina de Onis, general counsel for the $145.4 billion Texas Teacher Retirement System, Austin, and Rodrigo Garcia, deputy state treasurer and CIO for Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs. Mr. Garcia is Mr. Frerichs' designee on the Illinois State Board of Investments, Chicago, which manages $18.6 billion in defined benefit assets.
In a tweet, CalSTRS CIO Christopher J. Ailman warned the Aspen Institute that it was getting a rock star.
"Watch out @AspenAGLN you have a star joining your fellows and a huge, I mean huge Dodgers fan," Mr. Ailman said in a tweet topped with #RockStar. "Hold on to your hats, June Kim will be in a word AWESOME."
It could not be determined by press time whether there are Giants fans among the 2019 class of Aspen Institute financial leader fellows.
