James Donohue was named deputy chief investment officer at the Sacramento County (Calif.) Employees' Retirement System, CEO Eric Stern confirmed in an email.
The position has been vacant since 2016 when CIO Steve Davis was promoted from deputy CIO.
Effective in January, Mr. Donohue will assist in formulating and evaluating investment policies and strategy, developing the asset allocation and asset class structures, and overseeing and selecting investment managers and service providers for the $9.2 billion pension fund. He will report to Mr. Davis.
Mr. Donohue was private equity director for the Washington-based American Red Cross' combined $6 billion in pension and endowment assets. A representative from the Red Cross could not be reached for comment.
