ETFs extend their asset lead over hedge funds

Exchange-traded funds and exchange-trade products surpassed hedge funds in assets under management in the second quarter of 2015 and extended that lead to $1.75 trillion through June 30. The largest jump in ETF/ETP assets over hedge funds occurred in 2017, when assets grew to $4.8 trillion from $3.5 in 2016.

Since 2010, ETFs and ETPs have received an average $325.4 billion per year; hedge funds averaged $35.5 billion over that period. While hedge funds are available to a smaller pool of investors, their year-over-year growth from net new client money has averaged about 2% since 2010 as ETF/ETPs added about 13.8% annually.
