To spend or not to spend?

20 years into retirement, most retirees have spent only 20% of their nest eggs.

Our latest research explores the expectations and behavioral biases that have shaped how current retirees have spent and invested their assets. We also consider whether decades of access to traditional pensions may partially explain the resilience of their retirement savings – and why the changing landscape may force the next generation of retirees to make very different spending decisions.

This paper offers a critical starting point for plan sponsors to help them understand the retirement income decisions their participants will face.
