Joe Thomas was named chief investment officer and treasurer at BJC HealthCare, St. Louis, spokeswoman Kimberly Kitson said in an email.
He replaces Greg Schuler, who in July was named the CIO at the University of Pittsburgh, overseeing the investment management of the university's $4 billion consolidated endowment.
Mr. Thomas, previously director of investments, has served as co-CIO with Doug Garrett, director of investment research, since Mr. Schuler's departure. Mr. Garrett was promoted to an expanded role as deputy CIO, Ms. Kitson said.
Mr. Thomas will oversee the non-profit health-care organization's $8 billion investment portfolio, which includes defined benefit plan and endowment assets.
