Elga Bartsch joined the BlackRock Investment Institute as head of economic and markets research, a spokesman said.
Ms. Bartsch replaces Jean Boivin, who was previously promoted to global head of research at the firm, a new position.
Ms. Bartsch leads the institute's research on global macroeconomic topics. She is based in London.
She was most recently Morgan Stanley's chief European economist and global co-head of economics.
"She is a world-renowned market economist with extensive experience notably on Europe, monetary policy, and the economics of sustainability and climate change," Philipp Hildebrand, vice chairman of BlackRock, said in a news release.
BlackRock Investment Institute also hired Tara Rice in June as deputy head of economic and markets research. It is a new position.
Ms. Rice joined from the Financial Stability Board Secretariat, where she led work on evaluating the effects of the Group of 20 financial regulatory reforms. BlackRock, the $6.3 trillion money manager, launched the BlackRock Investment Institute in 2011.
