Through January, $78.6 billion in assets moved into U.S.-based exchange-traded funds; nearly one-quarter of that went into State Street's SPDR S&P 500 fund. Since the end of January 2016, about $500 billion moved into ETFs and about $1.1 trillion over the past three years.
Two of BlackRock's emerging markets iShares funds were among the top five asset gatherers, bringing in a combined $6.3 billion. While the majority of ETFs are designed to track a given benchmark, iShares' factor-based Edge MSCI USA Momentum fund hauled in $1 billion during January.
